A reinterpretation of carvings from Parliament has launched a series showing one of the least understood, widely represented and enduring human symbols.
A wild green man with a mask of foliage or with leaves emerging from his mouth is depicted in architectural sculpture from diverse traditions spanning millennia.
The green man appears in Ancient Sumer, India, within Islamic tradition and for over 2000 years in Europe from Russia to Ireland.
His pathway to the walls of Parliament was likely a Modern Gothic revival reference to the Medieval reference of Rome or Pre-Christian Celts who may have been referencing even earlier civilization.
Benevolent and affirming of the fertility of life, the Artist has recreated the gnarled likeness of the wild green man on a detailed high relief collectible coin weighing 30.75 grams or .98 troy oz of 9999 fine silver with a face value of $25.
With a low mintage of 4000, it is the first in the series and will be added quickly to themed collections of Canadiana, mythology and a love of nature.
