This coin is the first edition in a four part series launched by the Scottsdale Mint, in partnership with the island country of Barbados.
Striking in its simplicity, yet still rich in symbolism, the coin’s reverse features the broken trident from the country’s national flag, broken to symbolize the severing of ties with the UK at the country’s gaining of independence in 1966.
The trident floats on a mesmerizing sea of intricate radial waves, with the coin’s weight, purity and denomination value also visible on the reverse.
The coin’s obverse features the meticulously engraved Barbados coat of arms, complete with national heritage and industry symbols representing both land and sea, the fig tree, pride of Barbados flowers, sugar cane, a dolphin and a pelican.
The coat of arms also boasts the powerful watchwords of ‘Pride and Industry,’ while the date of release and name, ‘Barbados’ are also visible on the field.
The trident was instrument of choice for the mythical Greek god, Poseidon and as such has remained a much used symbol of all things oceanic.
